So…what exactly is a good groupie?
A good groupie is someone who loves music, who goes to shows to support the bands they love and to discover new bands to love. A good groupie buys music and tells his or her friends why they should be listening to it. They introduce themselves to the band as a fan and prove it by continuing to come back to shows, never taking home more than that night’s live music experience…and maybe some merch. A good groupie falls for a lyric or a melody, not the lead singer. And a good groupie lives for music and doesn’t know who he or she would be without it.
What kind of music do you like?
Lyrics are the bottom line for me. If the words touch my heart, it doesn’t matter what genre the song came from – I’ll listen. But if I had to pick, I’d say pop/rock is my absolute favorite. I love songs bursting with energy, clap-along verses and anthematic choruses. The kind you blare in the car, windows rolled down, as you speed down a deserted highway. I love well-written lyrics that say something meaningful. My favorite songs are the ones that taught me something about myself or held that one perfect lyric I needed to hear at a particular moment.
On the flip side, I also adore quiet little acoustic tunes that are heartbreakingly beautiful. The kind you’d listen to on a rainy day or after getting your heart crushed. There’s just something about an acoustic guitar turning pain into beauty that I love.
I also a listen to a lot of 50s and 60s pop and 70s folk rock as well as classic rock, some Top 40 and even a little country. (I am a Texan, after all!)
Who are some of your favorite bands?
The Beach Boys were the first band I ever fell in love with, and Brian Wilson is God in my musical world. I’m also a bit of a die-hard Hanson fan – I’ve seen them live more than 30 times across 6 states and 11 cities. Yes, that Hanson.
Other favorites include: Phantom Planet, Rooney, The Format, Steel Train, Rachael Yamagata, The Beatles, Eisley, Quiet Company, The Smiths, Andrew McMahon, John Mayer, Florence + the Machine, Fitz & the Tantrums, Bleachers, The Lone Bellow and Kacey Musgraves…just to name a few. :)
You can learn how I fell in love with some of my favorite bands by following the My Favorite Bands series.
What are you listening to lately?
What I’m listening to changes constantly. Sometimes I’m on the hunt for new music. Other times, I’m listening to old favorites or looking for the perfect song for a new playlist. You can check out my recent listens on Last.fm or come find me on Spotify.
Be sure to watch for my New Music Monday posts, posted the first Monday of the month, for all the new music I’m listening to. For even more new music, sign up for my email list to get the three best new bands I’ve discovered that I share with my email subscribers first each month.
How often do you go see bands?
I try to go as often as possible, which usually averages to 2-3 times per month. You’ll find me at the small and mid-size venues around town seeing local or up-and-coming bands. While I enjoy the occasional arena or summer amphitheater concert, I just feel more at home in a small, quaint venue.
A few times a year, I’ll travel to other cities and states to see bands with members of my musical girl gang I affectionately call “the girls”. We love following our favorite bands on a couple tour stops, traveling to a new city to see a favorite band, and occasionally I can even be talked into a music festival. You can read more about the trouble we get into in my Misadventures posts.
Why did you start a music blog?
The answer is a simple one: because I wanted a place to write about music. My professional career began in journalism, and once upon a time I did dream of pursuing a career in rock journalism. Maybe that will still happen, but for now I really prefer writing about music as a fan, for fellow fans, on The Good Groupie. You can read more about why I started The Good Groupie here.
Where else can I find you online?
The very best places to find me are Twitter and Instagram. I also have a Facebook page for the blog and an all-music Pinterest account that I have way too much fun playing around with.
If you follow me, please be sure to introduce yourself! I love following fellow music fans.
I’ve seen you Tweet a lot about #bestsongallweek – what is that?
#bestsongallweek is my Friday post where I invite you to share with me the very best song you heard during the last week. I share my pick on the blog, along with the story behind what made it the best song I heard and a link to listen to it. Then I ask for your picks on Twitter every Friday and keep track of them with the hashtag. You are welcome to participate whenever you feel like it! You can learn more about the history of #bestsongallweek here.
I have a question you didn’t answer here!
No problem. Come find me on social media or email me: email@example.com.
