I’ve been a Gilly since Oct. 5, 2000. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry – I’ll explain. But it’s safe to say that being a Gilly is one of the few things in my life that has lasted as long as my love of music – and something that has influence me as a music fan too. The experience has shaped me into who I am today and without it…I’m not sure who I would be.
For those not in the know, I’m talking about Gilmore Girls. If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen one of my freak outs over the cast of my all-time favorite show reuniting last summer in Austin or finally getting the ending it deserves.
That fandom has been furthered recently by finding myself in a Twitter DM full of fellow Gillies brought together by the Gilmore Guys podcast. It’s a delightful little world full of people just as cool and quirky as the Stars Hollow townies themselves.
Aside from the family conflict and amazing writing, one of the things I have always loved about Gilmore Girls is its obsession with music. I was just 16 – the same age as Rory with the same life ambition of becoming a journalist – when the first episode aired on Oct. 5, 2000. I was still heavy with my love of Hanson, the Beach Boys and not much else. But during my time spent with the Gilmore Girls each week, I found myself becoming more interested in the bands they referenced or the offbeat songs soundtracking my favorite scenes.
In short, Gilmore Girls introduced me to a whole new world of music – and the idea of seeking it out for myself rather than relying on the radio or a friend to tell me who I should be listening to. It also gave me a love for a realm of 80s music I didn’t even know existed.
Plus, can you really go wrong when the show’s theme song is by Carole King?
No, no you can’t.
Gilmore Girls is also one of those things that makes me feel at home. I’ve been feeling pretty restless for no good reason over the past month, so I’ve been spending a lot of time with the things that make me feel “home” – and that has meant watching a lot of Gilmore Girls.
So as I jump back into blogging today, I wanted to share a little playlist I’ve been working on and listening to full of all my favorite songs featured in the show’s seven-season run. (If you want a playlist with every song ever played on the show, this is a great one.)
A Gilly Playlist
Are you a music-lovin’ Gilly?
Bring out your inner Lane Kim and share your favorite song featured on the series in the comments. And if you aren’t a Gilly just yet, I’d love to hear what TV show furthered your love of music. (The O.C. is a close second for me under that criteria.)
Where you lead I will follow,
By the way, if you’re new around here you should know I put those music-lovin’ skills to good use once a month by sharing new music with my email subscribers. Get on the list!
P.S. If you need that bad ass “Gilly” pin, grab one here.
