You know how sometimes all of a sudden a band is everywhere? You’d never heard of them, and then two days later everyone is mentioning them on social media, their songs are popping up in playlists and you feel like you’ve been asleep, never realizing they existed?
That’s how Chicago band Fort Frances came into my life. I had no clue who they were last January, and then all of a sudden multiple music bloggers I admire when talking about them and I was seeing their songs pop up everywhere. So, being the devoted Good Groupie that I am, I looked them up and listened to a few songs.
I was hooked.
The band has just released a new single, “Building A Wall”, which I am loving, and their forth-coming album “Alio” has a majorly cool background story – stay tuned for more on that when I share my interview with lead singer David McMillin in the next few weeks! (BTW, he has a cool “My Life in Music” post over at All Things Next you should definitely check out in your getting-to-know-the-band process).
For now – meet Fort Frances, this week’s new music Monday pick:
For fans of:
Buxton, Quiet Company, The Apache Relay, cozy indie rock
About the band:
Look up Fort Frances’ music, and you will have the pleasure of listening to six years worth of honest and worthwhile indie rock. Since 2010, David, Jeff and Aaron have released albums and EPs that build off of the last. Each one has a little something different, a little something more – and they are a music fan’s dream. (How often do you find a band that manages to mature their sound in such a consistent that way?) Their next album, “Alio”, comes out April 22.
Why I like them:
Fort Frances is solid indie rock backed by honest, beautiful lyrics. Their songs are gorgeous recorded, yet I can hear how they would translate to a live setting. (Fantastically, for the record – fingers crossed I can make that happen sometime soon.) Much of their music has that fantastic sing-along quality I can never get enough of, and if I’m honest? I’d even wager they’re the cozy Chicago version of my beloved Quiet Company. Yeah, they’re that good.
Songs to check out:
All of them! But a few favorites are: “Building A Wall”, “Year of Gold” and “Best of Luck”
