Let’s start at the beginning. In my 2015 musical resolutions post, I said I wanted to talk more about the music that makes me…me. To do just that, today I’m kicking off my new monthly series, My Favorite Bands. These are the best of the best bands in my world. The ones whose music has had a huge impact on me at some point in my life. Once a month, I’ll tell you to story of how a particular band became my very, very favorite, why I love their music and how that music makes me…me.
And it seems only natural to start with my very first favorite band: The Beach Boys.
How it got started
I fell in love with these guys around age 7. I have distinct memories of “Endless Summer” (cassette copy, please) being my soundtrack for playing house. And when my elementary school best friend Lisa would come over to play, I would talk her into pretending like our husbands were Beach Boys away on tour.
I really have no idea how or why I came up with that scenario. But it’s so funny how little details like that, which seem so silly and insignificant at the time, have a way of becoming everything to you years and years later. Such foreshadowing…
But I honestly could not tell you what exactly hooked me on The Beach Boys all those years ago. I grew up listening to “oldies” radio stations and have always had a soft spot for the original rock ‘n rollers. Maybe it was those heavenly brotherly (and cousinly?) harmonies that sucked me in. Maybe it was the surf guitar. Maybe it was that the lyrics were easy for me to remember at such a young age. Whatever it was, The Beach Boys were the first band I ever loved and set the precedent for every band that has followed.
Why I love the music
I’ve been a fan of the Beach Boys for 23 years – or three-quarters of my life. I’ve never stopped listening to them over the years. It’s part of the beauty of becoming a fan of a band well after the bulk of their career – you never run out of catalog to listen to in-depth.
They’re also one of those bands whose lyrics have stuck with me throughout my life. Early on, I loved the surf and car tunes. Why? Cause it was fun, fun, fun. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist…) When I entered my teen years, “In My Room” was on permanent rotation on my Walkman and stereo. Wallflower child that I am, it perfectly summed up how sometimes I just needed to go to the space that was all my own and think or cry or simply listen to music to make my world normal again.
And now? So many amazing songs that deal with life and love. I’ve never been one of those girls who has had her wedding planned since she was 10. All I know is the future Mr. Groupie and I will use “God Only Knows” for our first dance. It is the perfect love song and a deal breaker.
In other words, The Beach Boys music is timeless to me. I will always be able to reflect on my life while listening to their songs, no matter what age I am.
Why The Beach Boys make me…me
Brian Wilson gave me my love of simple, yet beautifully crafted pop songs. I love gut-wrenching lyrics. (If you should ever leave me / Though life would still go on, believe me / The world could show nothing to me / So what good would living do me?) I crave the harmonies The Beach Boys pull off.
This band is my musical foundation. Everything I love is some direct result of the love of music their songs instilled in me all those years ago. They were the first, and they are a forever band. I will never not love them.
