I’ve had no shortage of new music to love lately. Which is saying something since I feel like I spent the last 4-5 months of 2014 in a total musical rut. From my music pals sharing new faves on social media to my amazing readers suggesting songs and bands to me over the last month, my headphones runneth over.
Today also marks the start of my new approach to sharing music I’m loving. I couldn’t wait until March to share all these, but starting the first Monday of every month we’ll be doing “New Music Mondays” around The Good Groupie where I’ll share a variety of new music with you, ranging from new bands I’m loving to bands that you might already know but are new favorites of mine as well as some of the new releases from my existing favorite bands. Here’s some of the new music I’m totally digging lately:
These are up-and-coming bands I’ve fallen in love with lately. Take a listen if one catches your eye!
Home: Brooklyn, NY
For fans of: The Shins, Rogue Wave, Fleet Foxes, folktronica
How I discovered them: Chris over at allthingsnext.com put these guys on my radar one Friday during #bestsongallweek. After personally recommending them to me, I check them out and found myself anxious to hear more.
Why I like them: They’re quite, mellow and incredibly interesting. This debut record takes me on twists and turns I wouldn’t have guessed. I love the echo-y vocals and percussion details throughout the album.
Songs to check out: “Money Can’t Buy”, “Spelled Out”

The Modern Electric
Home: Cleveland, OH
For fans of: Free Energy, Givers, River City Extension, cinematic pop
How I discovered them: Another find from Chris at allthingsnext.com.
Why I like them: Garrett’s vocals, with an edge of grit on some songs, sucked me in. The beautiful pop sensibilities of their songs paired with lots of acoustic guitar kept me listening. Grab a free mixtape from the band to get started.
Songs to check out: “Great Expectations”, “When All Else Fails”

Home: Atlanta, GA
For fans of: Trampled By Turtles, The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, southern rock ‘n roll
How I discovered them: Krissie from over at jrzygyrl.com by way of the 2015 Rock Boat. And holy smokes, when Krissie recommends a band to you, she RECOMMENDS A BAND TO YOU. Yes, it warrants all caps. This girl never misses with her musical picks, which is why we are music blogging soul mates.
Why I like them: Sometime in the past year, I became a lover of any and all bands with a southern rock edge. And Radio Birds whole heartedly fall into the category. Killer vocals, slick guitar riffs and paired with bass lines that will make your whole body move in time with the music. I am dying to see these guys live.
Songs to check out: “Paper Moon”, “Hold on Me”

These bands might not be new on your radar, but they’re bands I’ve really taken to in the last few weeks. Love one of them? Let me know what song I absolutely HAVE to check out!
I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard “Take Me to Church” since it hit mainstream radio, but I never gave it much thought. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t make me want to seek out the band’s album. Then Kelly picked Hozier’s “Jackie and Wilson” for her #bestsongallweek, and I took complete interest. Just another example of why you should never, ever let yourself judge a band by the single.
In early January I was sitting in my car with Alt Nation playing on SiriusXM. “Trojans” by Atlas Genius came on, and all I could think is, Why have I never listened to this band’s full album? So I did, and I loved it. Fingers crossed they swing through Houston soon so I can catch them live.
“They are fantastic!” everyone says. “You should listen to them!” everyone says. And I did, but Manchester Orchestra has always been one of those bands that’s a total bust for me. They’re okay, but I don’t quite see what everyone else does and nothing about their music or lyrics hooked me.
Then I heard “Every Stone” – a song I had somehow missed for the last two years – and fell in love. Even more so when Mandi pointed me towards “Hope”. Can I join the fan club now?
These bands are some of my very favorites who have recently releases new songs or albums.
The Lone Bellow
Seriously, a fan of this band could not hope for a better second album. Beautiful music, gut-wrenching harmonies and spectacular songwriting. They are a #bestsongallweek repeat for a reason!

Florence + The Machine
Just a few weeks ago, I found myself wondering whether Florence had come out with new music that I had missed. My question was quickly answered when the announcement of “How Big How Blue How Beautiful” hit the Internet late late week. The announcement video and “What Kind of a Man” are just as dreamy and painful and perfect as I could hope for from Florence Welch.
“I’ve listened to this song five times in a row, and I’m not done yet,” Tweeted my college friend Doriean last week. Dori has exceptional taste in music (has even Guest Groupied in up on this very blog), so I immediately ran off to find this new track. And it didn’t disappoint. So much soul and dirty guitar and southern goodness in one band should be illegal.
