Nothing says summer like The Beach Boys. And if you didn’t see this mini playlist coming from a mile away when I launched this little project, well…it might be time to get to know me better.
My love of Beach Boys music goes hand in hand with my love of oldies tunes during the summer. This is the music that soundtracked my summer days filled with reading and swimming and two-week road trip vacations to Chicago and Wisconsin growing up. They are inextricably linked for me.
Plus, c’mon…what better time to listen to a band whose early catalog is almost exclusively about surf and sand and summer love?
Below are five of my very favorite Beach Boys songs for summer because the week after the 4th of July always feels like the peak of summer to me. Use them to create or inspire your own summer playlist:
In elementary school, I would alter the line, “Tell the teacher we’re surfin’,” to whoever my new teacher for the coming year was. Lots of “Tell Mrs. Adams we’re surfin’, surfin’ U.S.A.” was sang in the summer of 1992 leading up to third grade.
I used to think this song was so romantic when I was little and dreamed of some day being someone’s little surfer girl. Now that I understand the lyrics, it’s actually a pretty sad little tune…but I still love it.
Fun, Fun, Fun
Hamburger stands and fast cars and blaring your music is what summer is all about. Oh, and having fun, fun, fun until your dad takes it all away.
Sure, a trip to Hawaii in the summer would be lovely…but really? I love this song for the beautifully layering of voices in the chorus.
All Summer Long
Perfect snapshots of summer rolled up into one fun little tune. Plus, that marimba!
