I like a little creativity in a playlist, which is why when I make one for a holiday I try to include as overlooked or under-appreciated songs as possible. When it comes to the Fourth of July, there’s tons of obvious picks – “Born in the USA” by The Boss, “Party in the USA” by Miley and pretty much anything with 4th of July in the title.
So for this mini summer playlist, I’m sharing five songs that include some American shout out but might be overlooked by the average music fan. Use them to mix up or kick off you 4th of July playlist!
“Firecracker” by Steel Train
One of my fave Steel Train songs. It’s peppy bounce and lighthearted feel is perfect for summer.
“Green Eyes & a Heart of Gold” by The Lone Bellow
This song always makes me picture the 4th of July’s I spent with Sam in Oologah, Oklahoma on a friend’s parent’s property out in the country. Cold beer and near-professional fireworks display all timed to kick ass music. Nothing will beat those.
“This Land is Your Land” by Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings
As if I didn’t love Ms. Jones enough already – a beautiful alternative version of this American classic to mix things up.
“Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band
Because I love country this year. And because the bridge always makes me a little teary-eyed.
“Dear Mr. President” by Fitz & the Tantrums
You’ll probably recognize this one from the car commercial it was on. I love it for the yell-along “hey’s” and that damn catchy piano that opens the song.
What is your fave song for a 4th of July playlist?
Wishing you a Happy Birthday, America!
