Boy bands are forever. As any girl who, like me, turned 13 years old in 1997 will attest…there was something special about your favorite group of guys who sang and danced and maybe even played an instrument or two. They sang lyrics that plucked our heart strings, lit up our eyes and stirred something inside us we didn’t quite understand yet. They were the beginning of something – something important.
Were the lyrics cheesy as hell? Yup. The dance moves laughable? Yeah. (And occasionally overly sexual for a pre-teen and young teen girl audience? Definitely.) Was the music even good? That’s debatable.
But today I’m throwing summer back to the late 90s with five of my favorite boy band tunes for a summer playlist:
“Larger Than Life” by the Backstreet Boys
Backstreet Boys, endless house of N64 and the occasional babysitting gig where I combined the two while watching the kiddos of a super-Christian couple who probably thought I was corrupting their children. This was my summer of 1999. (And kind of one of the best summers ever…)
“Bye Bye Bye” by NSync
The summer this single came out, I remember being SO excited to be at my grandparent’s house in Chicago where I could watch as much cable as I wanted. My station of choice that year? MTV. My reaction to when it was a non-stop NSync promo-a-thon for their album? Disappointed.
“Where’s The Love” by Hanson
My preferred single off Middle of Nowhere. I still never understand why more people don’t remember this song. You can hear a more recent (read: grown up) version of this song here.
“When The Lights Go Out” by 5ive
This song just makes me laugh. Because it’s so bad and ridiculous that it’s good. Kinda like my recent love for “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea.
“Summer Girls” by LFO
I kind of can’t believe I’m including this one because once I hear it…it never, ever, ever comes out of my head. But isn’t that what summer top 40 is all about?
What are you favorite boy band tunes for summer?
A not-so-former boy band lover,
Mini Playlists are a summer-long project where I share five songs built around a theme or genre to help you jump start or inspire a playlist for summer, just for fun. If you do, be sure to share your playlist with me. Happy playlisting!
