Hello, I’m Miranda and I am a playlist addict. Lately I’ve found myself obsessed with organizing songs based around a certain thing or theme or decade to provide the soundtrack of my day. Whether it’s a random theme station on Pandora, pulling up a decades playlist on Songza, finding a cool mix on 8tracks or sorting through some of the killer playlists Spotify has been offering up as of late, I’ve had the best time just hitting play and seeing what happens.
So last Thursday when I wrote my monthly “Top 5” post, I had a really hard time narrowing my theme down to 90s music (much less picking just 5 songs to share). My solution? Mini playlists all summer long!
Every Tuesday from now until I run out of ideas (or until September – which ever one comes first…), I’ll be sharing a mini playlist on the blog built around a theme for a summer playlist. From this mini playlist, I hope you’ll find a new song to love, revisit an old favorite and use my picks as a jumping off point to create or inspire your own summer playlists. (Be sure to share them with me when you do!) I’ll kick things off:
Something about summer always makes me crave the “oldies” – that iconic 50s, 60s an early 70s rock ‘n’ roll that built this crazy music world we all live in now. Whether it’s The Supremes telling me I can’t hurry love or The Beatles singing about how we all live in a yellow submarine, music from the beginnings of rock ‘n’ roll holds a special place in my heart and gets heavy play once the temperatures sky rocket, the days get longer and I wish I could spend my days on the beach or at a lake instead of at a desk.
Here are five of my favorite oldies songs for a summer playlist:
“Cecilia” by Simon & Garfunkle
Perfect song for a summer night bonfire sing-along, complete with Good Groupie-approved hand claps.
“Green Onions” by Booker T. & the MGs
This pick may or may not be influenced by one of my favorite childhood summertime movies, “The Sandlot”. It makes me want to ride bikes around the neighborhood and yell at bullies, “YOU PLAY BALL LIKE A GIRL!” Oh, and eat s’mores. (“S’more what? I just got here!”)
“This Magic Moment” by Jay & the Americans
Because summer should be all about first kisses and magic moments.
“Summer Rain” by Johnny Rivers
I didn’t learn until recently how much I love Johnny Rivers. I knew his voice but never his name. Plus, summer rainstorms are the best, as is spending your summer dancing to one of the greatest albums ever, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
“Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest
A song for catching fireflies during midnight backyard dance parties under a full moon.
What are some of your favorite “oldies” tunes for a summer playlist?
