It’s time to party like it’s 1999 this summer! Okay, I’m 99 percent kidding. But lately I keep finding myself flipping on the Summer Hits of the 90s station on Pandora and revisiting the summers when top 40 radio became a regular feature in my life.
If you’ve been reading the blog this year or follow me on Twitter, you know that I’ve been in a major on-again, off-again listening phase with 90s music since March. That Pandora playlist has been getting a lot of play around the Good Groupie Bachelorette Pad for the last week, so to honor the kick-off of summer…here are my top 5 90s songs for a summer playlist.
1. “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind (aka “The Spinning Song”)
I’m still not entire sure how this wound up being known as “The Spinning Song” in my group of friends from junior high, even though I’m pretty sure I’m the one that named it that. I just remember lots of afternoons spent spinning in a non-stop circle to this song. (And quickly switching directions when I felt like I was going to fall over…or puke.) But this song always makes me happy – the signature quality of a great summer song.
2. “No Scrubs” by TLC
Because every summer playlist needs a good girl power song. Trust me, you’re gonna need it by the end of the summer…
3. “Tubthumping” by Chumbawumba
Because every summer playlist needs that one ridiculous song you can crank when you’ve had one too many margaritas and dance around to with your friends.
4. “My Own Worst Enemy” by Lit
I love the opening of this song. That guitar sucks me in every single time. This one is perfect for blaring while flying down the interstate on a road trip.
5. “How Bizarre” by OMC
Another perfect road trip song. I used to love this song. I have no idea why, but it may have been the single horn that caught my ear. Then again, I always loved singing, “Sister Zina say ‘funky'”. I have no good explinations for this one, really.
So there’s my five 90s songs to get you started.
What 90s songs would you add to a summer playlist?
Oh, and on the off chance you’re in the one percent who would be into non-stop 90s music all summer…c’mon over. We’ll have a slumber party and watch the Spice Girls movie, okay?
