I wilt in the heat at music festivals. When I wake up in the morning and get ready for them, I barely bother with make-up because I know I’m just going to sweat it all off. A touch of foundation, lots of waterproof mascara and maybe a fun lip color and I’m good to go.
But over the years, I’ve picked up a few beauty bag tips and tricks to help get me through the day (and the heat) without looking like a hot mess by the time the festival headliner goes on. Some of these are my own tips, others are ones I’ve picked up along the way from friends. I hope a few of them will help you plan your festival beauty bag this summer.
Here’s what I always carry in my beauty bag:
The sun is my number one enemy at a music festival. Not only am I more pale than I’d care to admit and therefore prone to burning, but too much time in the heat and sun is always what completely drains me during festivals. In addition to sitting in the shade as much as possible, I make sure to keep a travel size bottle of sunscreen and a dab-on stick of my face/ears/part in my beauty bag. The travel size is easy to toss in and a lot lighter than a full bottle, so it won’t weigh down your bag. Dab-on sticks just for your face ensure you don’t end up with streaks of white all over your face. (Plus they’re not a greasy.) Both are must-haves in my bag.
2. Mint lip gloss
You’ll want to make sure you have a chapstick with a touch of sunscreen in it too (I’m a Carmex junkie, which has 15 SPF in it) – burnt lips are not attractive. Trust me: been there, done that. But I love throwing in one of my favorite mint lip glosses for a mini-cool down. The tingling sensation from the peppermint oil in my C.O. Bigelow glosses and shines goes on when I sit down in the shade to down a ton of water and cool off for a few minutes.
3. Extra hair ties & pins
I throw in extra hair ties and bobby pins because without fail, by 3 p.m. in the afternoon I’m totally over whatever cute festival hair style I tried to achieve, and I just want my hair out of my face. Plus, I guarantee you at least one friend will ask if anyone has extras – be the awesome friend that saves the day! I love the colored elastic ties you can find everywhere right now. The glitter ones I scored are just dying for a festival day.
Much like sunscreen, this should be applied every few hours because you’ll sweat it all off. And they just happen to make what I use in a mini-travel size, so I grab one before my festival trip to throw in my bag. Don’t be that person at the festival…
5. Pill box
This is a must-have for me since I’m prone to headaches. I throw in a few pain relievers and, of course, my allergy/sinus meds as a just-in-case in my cute little pill box. It’s way better to be prepared and take something when you feel a sun/heat-induced headache coming on rather than waiting until you get home. A little bit of planning (and a TON of water) helps make sure your festival weekend stays on track.
6. Baby wipes
This trick will CHANGE your festival life. (And if you already know this trick, I am jealous because I just learned it last year at Gentlemen of the Road.) Bring baby wipes with you for a mid-day mini-shower. Wiping down all exposed skin when I’d gotten to the point of feeling disgusting from sweat and dirt was so refreshing last year in Guthrie, I was wondering how I had lived 29 years and never been told this before. Nothing beats a post-festival shower…but this sure helped me feel less gross by the end of the day.
